Cairn Oil & Gas Sets Ambitious Net Zero Goal by 2030
Vedanta Ltd
Cairn Oil & Gas, India's leading private oil and gas company, has set an ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030.
Cairn's strategy tackles emissions reduction, renewable energy use, and nature-based solutions. This commitment aligns perfectly with the theme of this year's World Environment Day: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.
Restoring the Land, One Tree at a Time
Cairn's initiatives go beyond their operational areas in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. They are actively involved in biodiversity conservation and land restoration projects. Here are some highlights:
Planting 2 million trees by 2030.
Transforming a barren area in Andhra Pradesh into a thriving 86-acre mangrove wetland.
Reviving the Khejari tree (Prosopis Cineraria) in Rajasthan's Thar ecosystem.
Creating a 1600-acre greenbelt in Rajasthan.
Restoring 372 acres of mangrove forest in Gujarat's coastal areas.
A Multi-Faceted Approach to Reducing Carbon Footprint
The company is implementing several initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint and shift towards renewable energy:
Sourcing up to 70 MW of renewable energy by 2030, with 25 MW coming online as early as FY25.
Installing solar rooftops at their operational sites in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Achieving a significant 60% reduction in potential gas flaring intensity over the past four years.
Maintaining a Net Water Positive status by recycling over 96% of produced water.
Innovation for a Sustainable Future
Cairn is also exploring new avenues for sustainability. Here are some examples:
Feasibility study on a "Waste to Power" project that uses waste gas and industrial waste to generate power.
Bottling and cascading natural gas for CNG providers.
Optimising gas compressors and using ejectors to minimise flaring.
Implementing digital twin technology for better asset management.
Leading the Charge for a Greener Future
According to Dr. Steve Moore, Deputy CEO, Cairn Oil & Gas, “Cairn, as the largest private oil and gas producer in India, is proud to lead the charge towards a greener future by making a positive impact on the environment and communities we operate in. Our decarbonisation and environmental initiatives are aligned with the vision to become carbon neutral by 2030 through innovation and technology, coupled with our dedicated efforts.”
