Leeds Welcomes Royal Mail's First Fully Electric, Zero-Emission Delivery Office

The delivery business recently unveiled its 7,000th electric vehicle.
Harehills Delivery Office is Royal Mail’s first office to go fully green.
British postal service and courier company Royal Mail has recently launched the UK’s greenest delivery office in Harehills, Leeds.
The 19 delivery vans at Royal Mail’s Harehills Delivery Office are now fully electric and powered by renewable energy, another landmark in the company's efforts to make its services more environmentally friendly.
The vans are charged on-site using 100% renewable electricity, which means they will hit UK roads with zero emissions. The office building has an air source heat pump, which transfers heat from the outside air to warm the water in the office’s heating system.

This technology is three times more energy efficient than a typical gas or oil boiler. With this technology, the office can save about 5 tonnes of natural gas a year, equivalent to the energy consumption of three homes annually.
Most of Royal Mail’s delivery offices now use electric vans, but Harehills office is the first to go wholly electric.
The company is ratcheting up its green initiatives, particularly expanding its green fleet, and recently celebrated the launch of its 7,000th electric vehicle, with plans to introduce another batch of 18,000 electric vans in 2026, around half of which will be manufactured at the UK’s Ellesmere Port plant. This announcement is part of Royal Mail’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, with a 50% emissions reduction by 2030.

Helen Harper, Customer Operations Manager at Harehills Delivery Office, said: “We are thrilled to be the UK’s greenest delivery office and help on Royal Mail’s journey to being Net-Zero by 2040. This will benefit our staff and our customers in Harehills, reducing air and noise pollution locally and making our office more energy and cost-efficient.”
