  • Decarbonising the industrial sector, especially those with high emissions, is a top priority.

  • Executives say that decarbonisation and CO2 management need global solutions through industry collaborations.

Spanish energy company Enagás has joined forces with Calcinor for decarbonisation and sustainable carbon dioxide (CO2) management.

The companies have vowed to cut 900,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. To this end, Calcinor, a specialist in lime production, will capture CO2 at its lime plants, while Enagás will look after the transportation, liquefaction, storage, and shipment of the CO2 onto vessels for storage or use.

The partnership is another addition to the global efforts to decarbonise industries that are difficult to clean up.

Jesús Saldaña, General Director and Business Development and Affiliates General Manager at Enagás said: "This agreement with Calcinor, who are leaders in the industrial use of minerals, is a major leap forward in decarbonising this hard-to-abate sector.

"By leveraging their respective synergies, these two companies will become leaders in innovation and competitiveness in sustainable CO2 management in this sector."

To bring the project to fruition, the companies, among other things, will explore opportunities for European funding, carry out studies to analyse the technical, financial, and legal feasibility of their CO2 value chain, and build infrastructure as part of their goals.

Andoni Mendiola, Calcinor's Director of Business Development and Sales, commented: "The company believes that decarbonisation calls for a global solution, covering the entire process to ensure responsible use or storage.

"This strategic partnership with Enagás means we can move forward with a shared, coordinated vision for designing a comprehensive, viable value chain that's fully aligned with decarbonisation goals, promoting an industry that's more environmentally friendly and ready for future challenges, while remaining competitive."
