Enagás, Heidelberg to Develop CO2 Capture Projects in Spain
Enagás, S.A.
Companies are interested in taking on carbon projects, with around 53 companies expressing interest in infrastructure to store CO2.
Support Spain in achieving carbon neutrality and a circular economy.
Enagás, a Spanish energy company, and Heidelberg Materials, a global manufacturer of building materials, have agreed to collaborate on developing CO2 management projects in northern Spain.
The primary goal is to develop projects that reduce CO2 emissions in northern Spain and help both Spain and Europe achieve their climate goals.
To this end, Heidelberg Materials, using its innovative technologies, captures CO2 at its facilities, and Enagás will transport, liquefy, store or potentially use the captured CO2.
Together, the companies will study how to capture carbon effectively, design infrastructure for the processes, and assess the costs and other technical aspects of the projects.
The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, said: “This agreement will allow Enagás, together with an industrial benchmark such as Heidelberg Materials, to make progress in our joint commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and to play a relevant role in achieving the decarbonisation objectives of Spain and Europe. The development of more effective technologies for sustainable CO2 management is key to successfully tackling the decarbonisation of non-emitting sectors."
This partnership is important because it supports sustainable ways to manage CO2, helps the construction industry achieve carbon neutrality and encourages a circular economy.
CO2 capture and storage have been gaining momentum recently, with around 37 companies aiming to undertake CO2 projects that will reduce over 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
Jesús Ortiz, CEO of Heidelberg Materials Hispania, said: “At Heidelberg Materials Hispania, we want to contribute to the transformation of the building materials sector in Spain, based on the know-how and global leadership of our group. We offer our customers sustainable products and solutions tailored to their needs and their own sustainability targets, including 100% carbon-free products, thanks to CO 2 capture. I am confident that the path we are taking will be a reference and an incentive to move towards a sustainable construction model committed to carbon neutrality and the circular economy in Spain.”
