World’s First CO2 Capture Filter Gigafactory Opens in BC

The gigafactory is a major add-on in industrial carbon capture as well as a practical and scalable way to reduce emissions.
It is a breakthrough and benchmark for large-scale production of CO₂ capture technology.
Svante Technologies Inc. ("Svante"), a leading Canadian carbon capture and removal solutions provider, has opened the world’s first commercial gigafactory for producing carbon capture & removal filters.
The filters will trap carbon dioxide (CO₂) directly from factories and the atmosphere, which help cement, steel, energy, waste processing, and other industries reduce carbon emissions and air pollution.
The new 141,000-square-foot factory, also called Redwood Facility, is located in Burnaby, British Columbia (BC), and can produce filters to capture up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ a year—equivalent to carbon emissions from more than 27 million cars. Their filters are made with solid sorbents coated in a special material called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that attract and hold onto CO₂.

This launch is aimed at supporting the expansion of the carbon removal industry, which is growing at a faster pace as the world realises the need to curb climate change more than ever before. For the present, the company is zeroed in on those sectors where it is much cheaper and easier to capture CO₂. These include pulp and paper, ethanol, and waste-to-energy, with plans to expand to harder sectors, including steel and cement, in the future.
A total of $145 million has been raised with the backing of Chevron, United Airlines Ventures, Samsung, GE Vernova, and others. Svante says that more such factories are needed in the future to meet surging demand for CO₂ capture.
Their filters have already found application in pilot projects with Chevron and Lafarge, in California and British Columbia, as well as in direct air capture systems, which pull CO₂ directly from the atmosphere.

Claude Letourneau, President & CEO of Svante, said: "Today, we are making history. This gigafactory is a critical step forward in building the infrastructure necessary to scale up the carbon management industry and build a marketplace for physical CO2.
"This first-of-a-kind manufacturing facility is a demonstration of what’s possible when technology and climate ambition align to lend nature a hand in managing global CO2 emissions.”
