OMV Petrom, Southeastern Europe's largest integrated energy company, has signed a six-year contract with Expur S.A. to supply fully refined vegetable oil.

This deal supports OMV Petrom's goal of becoming the region's leading producer of renewable fuels.

Focus on Low-Carbon Transportation

The vegetable oil will be used as feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO) production at OMV Petrom's Petrobrazi refinery. This move aligns with their commitment to providing low-carbon emission transportation solutions for their customers. The contract allows for a two-year extension, with deliveries starting in 2028.

Long-Term Partnership with Expur

Expur S.A., a Romanian subsidiary of Avril Group, a European leader in vegetable oil and biofuels, will supply up to 0.7 million tonnes of vegetable oil, valued at over EUR 750 million depending on the final order quantity. The price is linked to an international benchmark.

Quotes from Key Players

Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing: "We are always looking for solutions for low-carbon emissions transportation, so as to remain our customers’ preferred choice in the future. Alongside electro-mobility, biofuels are our answer to this challenge. Through the contract with Expur, we are securing part of the raw material to produce diesel from renewable sources, thus progressing towards our ambition to become the first major producer of renewable fuels in the region."

Nikolay Belchev, CEO Expur S.A.: "In Expur, we frame our projects and investments on providing people with healthier food, protecting nature and supporting the circular economy. Last year we started up the engines of a cogeneration plant, a EUR 15.5 million investment where we use the husks from sunflower seeds hulls to generate the electricity and steam needed to run our Slobozia factory. We are the largest employer in Slobozia and we continue to develop strategic partnerships such as the one with OMV Petrom to support our long-term vision of becoming a leader in providing people with healthy food and renewable energy through excellence and innovation for a clean future."

Sustainable Supply Chain

At least 50% of the vegetable oil will be sourced from Romania, ensuring a sustainable flow throughout the production and distribution. This commitment aligns with OMV Petrom's broader decarbonisation efforts in Romania, which include a EUR 1 billion investment. This investment will fund the construction of a SAF/HVO facility and two green hydrogen facilities at the Petrobrazi refinery.

Securing Future Feedstock

Last year, OMV Petrom acquired a 50% stake in "Respiră Verde," Romania's leading used cooking oil collector. This move ensures a long-term source of raw materials for biofuel production. "Respiră Verde" collects up to 10,000 tonnes of used cooking oil annually from businesses in hospitality and retail sectors.
