enfinium: Turning Waste into Sustainable Power
enfinium, a frontrunner in the UK's energy-from-waste sector, diverted a staggering two million tonnes of unrecyclable waste from landfills in 2023.
This great achievement accelerated the UK's transition to net zero emissions by stopping more than 450,000 tonnes of harmful emissions from entering the environment.
Delivering Sustainable Energy
Their latest ESG report, "Delivering a Sustainable Tomorrow," details enfinium's progress in waste-driven decarbonisation. It also outlines their ambitious new ESG targets for the coming years, aligning with their plan to deliver large-scale carbon removals for the UK.
Making a Difference Today
The UK generates millions of tonnes of unrecyclable waste annually. enfinium steps in by transforming this waste into reliable, homegrown power that feeds the National Grid. In 2023 alone, they diverted enough waste to power 5,00,000 homes while preventing harmful emissions.
Their commitment to reaching net zero by 2033, as outlined in their Net Zero Transition Plan, is reinforced by their 2023 ESG report. Initiatives like installing gale breakers at their Ferrybridge 1 site demonstrate their continuous efforts towards operational energy efficiency. enfinium has also achieved a remarkable 37% reduction in Scope 2 emissions by switching to 100% REGO-backed electricity across their entire fleet.
Vision for the Future: Decarbonisation Hubs
enfinium's vision extends beyond immediate waste management. They aim to transform their facilities into local "decarbonisation hubs" powered by the inevitable stream of unrecyclable waste the UK will generate in the coming decades. By leveraging existing energy-from-waste infrastructure and cutting-edge carbon capture and storage technology, enfinium has the potential to produce a massive 1.2 million tonnes of reliable, high-quality carbon removals by 2039. These hubs will not only capture carbon but also contribute to heat networks, private wire systems, and even generate electrolytic hydrogen.
Beyond Waste: Protecting Nature
enfinium recognises the importance of environmental stewardship beyond just tackling climate change. They are committed to protecting nature and biodiversity around their facilities. In 2023, improvements at their Parc Adfer site continued to meet the criteria for biodiversity net gain. This includes measures like leaving designated areas undisturbed, monitoring invasive plant growth, and nurturing natural habitats for new wildlife.
Giving Back to the Community
2023 also marked the launch of enfinium's Philanthropic and Community Funding programme. This programme demonstrates their dedication to supporting local communities and charities through charitable giving, community funding, volunteering opportunities, and sponsorships. In 2023, the programme awarded over £158,000 in grants to support over 60 projects, ranging from supporting local Brownie packs and beekeeping charities to community centers and air ambulance services.
Mike Maudsley, Chief Executive Officer of enfinium, said: “I am incredibly proud of the progress we have been able to report on our ESG goals from the last year. enfinium is on an ambitious journey to decarbonise its operations and deliver high-quality carbon removals at scale for the UK, and so it is important that we monitor progress against these plans. I would like to thank the efforts of all enfinium employees whose tireless efforts have helped us along.”
