Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. has achieved 90% renewable electricity globally, five years earlier than originally projected.

This progress is a result of virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) in North America (solar) and Europe (wind) that are anticipated to ultimately supply all facilities in those regions with 100% renewable electricity.

Charles River is committed to supporting sustainable business practices and driving marked change for its clients, partners, communities, and planet. The Company has decreased Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions on an absolute basis by 23% from 2018 to 2023.

Charles River's "Customised High Efficiency Automated Energy Recovery System" at two of its facilities in China has been selected as one of the Top Projects for Energy Efficiency for presentation at the 2023 ENERGY STAR Industrial Meeting.

This system avoids over 5,000 metric tonnes of GHG emissions annually, as well as 11,000 MWh of electricity use. A second project, "Solar Thermal System to Support Process Hot Water Loads," was awarded an honourable mention.

Charles River recognises that collaboration across industries can help accelerate progress toward sustainability goals. In 2021, Charles River joined the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI) and has worked with that organisation to engage suppliers in discussions on sustainable practices. In 2023, Charles River extended its collaborative spirit with three new industry partnerships:

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership: Charles River is helping to advance the voluntary market for green power and the development of those sources by choosing green power.

  • Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC): Charles River plans to expand upon existing work to convert to renewable electricity and join other leading companies striving to scale the deployment of renewable energy for heating and cooling applications.

  • Energise: Charles River aims to reduce Scope 3 (value chain) GHG emissions by engaging with suppliers to promote more sustainable supply chain practices and the use of renewable electricity.

Charles River is committed to working toward a sustainable future, and its recent achievements and new partnerships demonstrate its progress in this area.
