  • India's demand for cooling systems will see a spike by 2050 due to more IT parks and data centres.

  • The tie-up helps address those demands and support the nation's net-zero targets.

Tata Power Trading Company Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Power that trades power and provides consultancy services, has partnered with Keppel, a Singapore-based global asset manager with strong expertise in sustainability-related solutions, to introduce sustainable Cooling-as-a-Service (CaaS) solutions in India.

What is Cooling-as-a-Service (CaaS)?

CaaS is a type of service that allows building owners and businesses to use sustainable cooling systems without making a lot of upfront investments in equipment. This will significantly reduce their infrastructural investments and energy costs.

Partnership and its Importance

The partnership will support India's climate goals by reducing energy use and promoting sustainability, particularly through its programmes like the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) and the Smart Cities Mission.

The programmes aim to make Indian cities more sustainable and energy-efficient. The new solution can reduce energy use by up to 40% and reduce carbon emissions by 50% in high-demand areas like IT parks, airports, and data centres in the country.

Tata Power is one of India’s largest integrated power companies, and with its deep understanding of the Indian energy sector, it will bring its expertise in power supply, solar energy, and energy management.

Meanwhile, Keppel, with its advanced cooling technology using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), has a lot of experience managing cooling systems in Asia and has succeeded in countries like Singapore.

India's Huge Demand for Cooling Systems

The International Energy Agency predicts cooling could account for 28% of India's total energy demand by 2050. This collaboration will address that demand with energy-efficient solutions and align with India's net-zero and carbon reduction targets.

Mr Tarun Katiyar, CEO, Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. said, "This collaboration represents a significant milestone in transforming India’s energy landscape, aligning with our commitment to a sustainable and energy-efficient future. By supporting the India Cooling Action Plan and the Smart Cities Mission, we are paving the way for innovative, intelligent Cooling-as-a-Service solutions that foster energy-efficient ecosystems across urban and energy intensive hubs. Together, we will contribute towards India’s ambitious targets of doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.”

Mr Poh Tiong Keng, Executive Director, Emerging Markets, EaaS, Infrastructure, Keppel said, "We are pleased to partner with Tata Power, leveraging their strong local presence, to deliver our innovative and proven Cooling-as-a-Service solutions to the vast Indian market. Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, Keppel has successfully implemented energy-efficient cooling solutions in Singapore and other parts of Asia. Given that conventional cooling accounts for up to 50% of a building’s energy, we are confident that this collaboration will significantly transform India’s cooling landscape and support the country's Net Zero targets.”
