PepsiCo released its 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report, detailing progress on its pep+ initiative.

The pep+ programme aims to drive long-term growth while prioritising sustainability and social responsibility.

Key Achievements

  • Emissions Reductions: PepsiCo surpassed its emissions goals by exceeding their targets for both Scope 1 & 2 emissions (13% reduction) and total emissions (5% reduction) compared to 2022.

  • Sustainable Packaging: The company reduced its use of virgin plastic from non-renewable sources by 4% year-over-year.

  • Regenerative Agriculture: PepsiCo doubled its global regenerative farming footprint to over 1.8 million acres. This method helps improve soil health and reduce environmental impact.

  • Water Efficiency: PepsiCo achieved a 25% improvement in water use efficiency at high-risk locations, exceeding their goal two years early.

  • Water Access: Over 10 million people gained access to safe water in 2023, bringing the total to over 91 million since 2006.

  • Healthier Choices: PepsiCo introduced new goals for sodium reduction and diverse ingredients. They achieved a 36% reduction in sodium content for a portion of their food products and delivered 75 billion servings of diverse ingredients.

"Three years into our pep+ journey, it's clear the focus we have driven throughout the business is working in many areas. Our use of virgin plastics is down year-over-year and our total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are down compared to 2022, as well as versus our 2015 baseline. This is all to be celebrated. However, the road ahead will continue to present challenges," said Jim Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer at PepsiCo. "We continue assessing where to devote time and resources to deliver meaningful impact and ensure we are focusing our efforts. Building strong and strategic partnerships with other scale players and adopting and scaling breakthrough technologies are central to our strategy."
