Nestlé, a Swiss multinational food and beverage company, is advancing environmentally friendly packaging for its popular brands.

The company has recently introduced new paper-based options across its major brands.

Packaging for Vital Proteins

They have launched paperboard canisters for their Vital Proteins products in the US. This will reduce plastic use by 90 per cent. The products are easy to open and close, avoid leaks, and are well-built for everyday use. Nestlé’s research centre in New Jersey has developed them with the help of outside partners.

Current Developments

The company's global research teams are partnering with other innovative businesses to develop bespoke paper packaging for several products.

Nescafé Packaging

The Swiss giant has launched a high-barrier recyclable paper refill for Nescafé in the UK. Now, customers can refill their glass jars at home, reduce packaging waste by 97 per cent, and keep the coffee as fresh as they want. Also, the Nescafé Cappuccino range across Europe uses paper instead of plastic, making it completely recyclable.

Challenges

Axel Touzet, Head of the Coffee Business Unit for Nestlé, says that coffee is sensitive to air and moisture, so it needs effective and sustainable packaging solutions supported by science to keep it fresh.

Overall, the recent packaging developments aim to make 95 per cent of its plastic packaging recyclable and reduce new plastic usage by a third by 2025.
