Marriott International has achieved a milestone in reducing its environmental impact by receiving approval for its science-based emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This makes Marriott the world's largest hospitality company with both near-term and long-term science-based climate goals.

Reduction Plans

The company has committed to a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) across its operations and supply chain. Here's a breakdown of their goals:

Short-term (by 2030):

  • Cut absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by nearly half (46.2%) from 2019 levels.

  • Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from various sources by 27.5% compared to 2019.

  • Motivate 22% of suppliers to set their own science-based emissions targets by 2028.

Long-term (by 2050):

  • Achieve net-zero emissions across the entire value chain, meaning a 90% reduction in absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions from the 2019 baseline.

Focus on Three Key Areas

Marriott's strategy to reach net-zero emissions hinges on three main areas:

  • Energy Reduction: They will be actively working to decrease energy consumption across their vast network of hotels.

  • Renewable Energy Sourcing: The company is committed to increasing its reliance on clean energy sources like solar and wind power.

  • Lower-Carbon Products: Marriott will prioritise purchasing goods and services with a smaller carbon footprint for its properties.

Sustainability Efforts Beyond Emissions

Marriott's commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond just carbon reduction. Their sustainability efforts encompass a wider range of initiatives, including:

  • Designing hotels with resource efficiency in mind.

  • Implementing technologies to track and minimise energy, water, and waste.

  • Increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

  • Implementing responsible and local sourcing practices.

  • Supporting innovative projects focused on ecosystem restoration.

Marriott's sustainability platform, Serve 360, serves as a guiding force for these efforts. This platform aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to create a positive impact on social, environmental, and economic issues within the communities Marriott operates in.
