Holcim US Aggregates Excel in Community, Environment
Holcim Ltd
The National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the foremost advocate for the aggregates sector, recently celebrated the outstanding environmental and community initiatives of Holcim US aggregates operations in various states, including Massachusetts, Illinois, West Virginia, Minnesota, and Oklahoma.
This commendation formed a pivotal part of NSSGA's annual Awards of Excellence Programme.
Michael LeMonds, the Vice President of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) and Chief Sustainability Officer at Holcim US, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
He emphasised the integral role aggregates play in the construction industry and underscored the company's dedication to environmental responsibility and community engagement.
According to LeMonds, their connection with the communities they operate in is a fundamental aspect of their identity, and they take pride in contributing to these communities' thriving futures.
Among the notable Holcim US recipients were:
Peabody Quarry (Mass.): Honoured with the Gold award for outstanding community relations.
Elburn Aggregates (Ill.): Recognised with the Bronze award for exceptional environmental practices.
Millville Quarry (W.Va.): Received the Bronze award for environmental excellence.
Pit 21 Sand & Gravel (Minn.): Acknowledged with the Bronze award for its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Thackerville Sand Plant (Okla.): Also awarded the Bronze for their environmentally responsible practices.
NSSGA highlighted the winning locations' comprehensive environmental management programmes, their dedication to land conservation, compliance with technical environmental and regulatory requirements, and active involvement in their respective communities as key factors in their selection for these awards.
Furthermore, facilities receiving the prestigious Gold category designation are granted automatic recognition for five years, starting from their initial designation.
At present, Holcim boasts five facilities enjoying this extended recognition period, including two community relations awardees (Presque Isle Quarry in Michigan and Peabody Quarry in Massachusetts) and three environmental excellence recipients (Battle Creek Sand & Gravel Pit in Michigan, Fox River Quarry in Illinois, and Lockport Quarry in New York).
The NSSGA initiated its awards programme to honour aggregate producers who contribute positively to the public perception of the industry and its operational practices.
