The on-site SAF plant ensures that airlines can access SAF at a lower cost and achieve their decarbonisation goals. FREEPIK
  • The facility's construction will happen in stages, bringing down SAF costs.

  • The aim is to produce SAF locally and affordably.

  • The project will generate hundreds of full-time jobs and boost the local economy.

Avina Synthetic Aviation Fuel (Avina), a cost-effective clean fuels developer, in partnership with the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), will develop the US's first on-site sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility.

The plant will employ an alcohol-to-jet process, which turns alcohol into jet fuel, a first-of-its-kind method used in the US. More specifically, the PureSAF™ technology developed by Swedish Biofuels AB and licensed globally by KBR will convert alcohol from renewable sources into jet fuels that meet industry standards.

The facility will be located on PIT’s precincts, just south of the main terminal.

The on-site production of SAF will make it more accessible and available at a lower cost to airlines, which, in turn, helps them achieve their decarbonisation goals by using fuels that emit at least 65% less carbon than traditional jet fuel.

The construction will happen in stages and, once completed, will produce over 100 million gallons of SAF annually, as well as generate hundreds of full-time jobs, helping the local economy grow.

Top aviation players like Boeing have thrown their weight behind the project, with executives from KBR, Avina, and PIT highlighting the importance of the aviation sector’s immediate transition to sustainability.

Vishal Shah, Founder and CEO of Avina, said: “Avina is excited to support the vision of Pittsburgh International Airport and bring a SAF production facility to their doorstep.  We are committed to bringing hundreds of jobs to the community and expanding the energy production ecosystem.

"With Pittsburgh’s commercial and cargo demand along with the network to connect to the other regional hubs, we aim to set the platform for such developments nationally and globally.”
