  • Frankfurt to welcome a new e-fuel production facility to support the decarbonisation efforts in Germany.

  • e-SAF can partially or fully replace the fossil kerosene used in long-haul flights.

INERATEC, a German company that produces e-fuels and e-chemicals, has announced that it has received €70 million in funding to start building Europe's largest e-fuel production plant in Frankfurt, Germany.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide a €40 million loan, and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst will provide a €30 million grant for the project's successful execution.

INERATEC uses Power-to-Liquid technology to produce many synthetic fuels like Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), marine fuels and e-Diesel. This process involves mixing green hydrogen from industrial by-products with carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from biogenic sources like biogas plants or industrial emissions. This is an effective way to cut carbon emissions by reusing CO2, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

The facility is expected to produce around 2,500 tonnes of e-fuel annually, which could help replace fossil kerosene partially or fully on long-haul flights. The company has another commercial advantage, its compact and modular production units will allow the technology to be easily scaled and adapted in different locations.

Also, this new initiative aligns with the European ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which requires airlines to use at least 1.2% e-SAF by 2030, expanding the scope of SAF.

INERATEC CEO Dr. Tim Boeltken, said: “This funding marks a new era for INERATEC. With the funding commitment from the EIB and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, we are accelerating the industrialization of e-fuel production.

"This will make a tangible impact in reducing CO2 emissions in sectors where direct electrification is not feasible. The focus now is on scaling up and deploying our technology where it is needed most.”
