Tesco Adopts Carbon Profiling for Seafood Supply Chain
Tesco PLC

The carbon profiling tool helps suppliers make important changes to reduce their environmental impact by providing insights on reducing their carbon emissions.
Tesco's collaboration with suppliers is paramount for the company to meet its long-term carbon reduction targets.
Tesco, a leading multinational retailer, has made plans to reduce its carbon footprint across its seafood supply chain and products.
To this end, the UK supermarket chain plans to adopt the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT) tool to track its seafood supply chain emissions.
With the assistance of this tool, businesses understand the carbon footprints of their wild capture and aquaculture seafood products. Tesco and its suppliers will use SCEPT to identify their emissions hotspots or where their emissions are the highest and implement measures to reduce them.
Natalie Smith, Head of Sustainable Agriculture and Fisheries at Tesco, said: "We recognise the responsibility we have to support our seafood suppliers in reducing their carbon footprint, in line with our collective net-zero commitments.
"We know the importance of ensuring we have accurate primary data to make informed choices on how we do this, and the rollout of Seafish’s carbon tool across our seafood supply chain is an important step on this pathway."
The company has already set goals to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its business by 2050, and this tool plays a larger role in achieving these goals because Tesco's emissions from supply chains and products account for 90% of its total carbon footprint.

SCEPT will help them have a clear idea of where their emissions are higher by providing them with data so they can narrow down areas and make improvements. The tool was launched in 2024, and recently, Tesco organised a webinar to explain how it works, which data needs to be collected, and how to use it effectively.
Also, it facilitates comparison by generating industry-wide data, which is important for setting benchmarks and publicly sharing progress on emissions reduction.
Some of the company's seafood suppliers have already started using the tool and said it is very effective and impactful.

Scott Johnston, Technical Director at Sofina Foods Europe and an early adopter of the tool and a Tesco supplier, said: "Together with other Seafood Grimsby and Humber Alliance members, we are delighted to have helped develop the SCEPT to ensure it is able to meet our business needs.
"Sofina has been active in using the tool to inform its seafood supply chain operations, which is providing valuable insights on key focus areas for decarbonisation.
"We are excited to be working with the major UK retailers, including Tesco and our seafood supply chain to use the tool to support accurate carbon baselining and transformational steps towards shared climate goals."
