  • Carbon labelling informs consumers about the environmental impact of the food products they consume.

  • Customers are being educated on how to make sustainable choices and the ways to achieve them.

Café Ubé, a restaurant business in Jersey that serves fresh, tasty and local food, has introduced carbon labelling to track the environmental impact of their products.

This will help customers make more sustainable choices, eventually reducing their carbon footprint. Each product at Café Ubé will display a label showing its emissions, which means the total amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced at every stage of the product's journey from farming and processing to packaging and transport.

The Jersey Café uses an A-E rating system, with A representing very low carbon impact and E representing high carbon impact.

About 75% of the Café's menu falls under the A or B rating, meaning their products have a relatively lower carbon footprint. Yet, some food items, such as red meats like beef and pork, have a higher carbon impact. To reduce this impact, they use only locally and responsibly sourced farmed beef.

Café Ubé has partnered with the Government of Jersey’s Plate to Planet project to use My Emissions carbon accounting software to calculate the carbon footprint. This software helps the restaurant business track details of the environmental impact of their products at every stage of production.

This partnership is the first of its kind in the hospitality sector, with the government working alongside local businesses to benefit the environment.
