  • The workforce has grown by 15% to accelerate the energy transition goals.

  • However, challenges remain, including high costs, slow permitting, and declining European competitiveness.

The natural gas infrastructure and transport company Gasunie will provide a fillip to the energy transition and industrial activities in the Netherlands by investing €12 billion in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen by 2030.

The company's top executives say hurdles lie ahead. High network tariffs, slow permitting, and declining European competitiveness are factors hindering the green energy transition.

To effectively deal with this, the company has updated its strategic agenda to focus on building hydrogen infrastructure, increasing biomethane supply, and advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. They have prioritised the development of a national hydrogen network, with the first section set to transport hydrogen by next year.

Other important projects include the Porthos CCS and the WarmtelinQ. The former is progressing with a 30-km onshore pipeline already laid, while the latter is under development and will transport heat from the Port of Rotterdam to homes and businesses in Zuid-Holland. Also, Gasunie is ratcheting up its LNG import capacity in Rotterdam and Eemshaven.

Gasunie CEO Willemien Terpstra, said: "The Netherlands is currently at the tipping point where it will be seen whether we will become more sustainable with industry or without. If this is without, it will be disastrous for the Netherlands and for Europe – disastrous for our prosperity, for our jobs, for our long-term autonomy, and for our environment. Making things more sustainable and offering solutions that can keep industry in the Netherlands: that is a top priority for Gasunie."
