Sustainability requires bold moves from entrepreneurs and established companies.

One example is De Nada, a 2021-founded tequila startup, which is taking the challenge head-on by using 100% recyclable aluminium bottles for its blanco and reposado tequilas.

This new packaging replaces glass bottles, which break easily and has a sustainable cork and wood cap.

“As a company, our goal is to be as sustainable as possible,” Adam Millman, co-founder and CEO, said, “Danny [Neeson] and I are always trying to find new ways to improve our environmental impact, and becoming certified carbon neutral was a great first step, but we knew there was more we could do. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, unlike glass and some other alternative packaging coming to market. It’s imperative for us to continually do better.”

The aluminium bottles will be $40 and $43 and will be available in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in stores and online. Select bars and restaurants in these states will also carry them.

Aluminium recycling is less energy-intensive than glass recycling and maintains quality through repeated recycling. However, there are challenges, for example, the belief that heavier glass bottles mean better quality and the fact that consumers can’t see the product through aluminium packaging.

Despite these obstacles, big companies are switching to aluminium to reduce production and transportation costs and improve supply chain sustainability. For instance, Hyke Gin switched from glass to aluminium bottles and can fit 48% more bottles per pallet. This means 50,000 aluminium bottles can be transported on a single lorry compared to 20,000 glass bottles, which is a 91% reduction in carbon emissions.
