Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has introduced the TCS Product Life Cycle Profiler, a groundbreaking tool for assessing the life cycle of products.

This innovative tool takes a dynamic and scalable approach to product life cycle assessment (LCA), allowing businesses to calculate environmental impacts across their product lines.

Companies worldwide are increasingly focused on improving their sustainability efforts by reducing carbon emissions in their supply chains, minimising their carbon footprint, and developing circular business models.

The ability to measure the long-term environmental impact of the products they manufacture or purchase is central to their sustainability strategies. Additionally, life cycle assessments, which measure a product's environmental impact, are crucial in helping environmentally conscious consumers make purchasing decisions, which is driving up demand for reliable and flexible LCA tools.

The TCS Product Life Cycle Profiler enables simultaneous LCA for all products originating from a specific manufacturing facility, providing a comprehensive overview of impacts from various sources, including materials, transportation, suppliers, energy consumption, and manufacturing processes.

It assesses environmental impacts across multiple dimensions, extending beyond greenhouse gas emissions to encompass factors such as human toxicity, water usage, ozone depletion, and particulate matter.

The tool identifies impact hotspots, alerting organisations to areas where changes may be necessary. Consequently, companies can conduct scenario simulations to develop low-impact, circular product strategies and lead the way in decarbonisation efforts.

This innovative solution, developed in collaboration with PRé Sustainability, addresses the limitations of traditional LCA systems, including challenges related to data management, a non-scalable approach that focuses on individual products, and static point-in-time reports that lack insights into impact scenarios or recommended actions.

TCS leverages its extensive expertise in data management, analytics, and digital technologies to integrate primary enterprise data and employ activity-based footprint algorithms for dynamic and scalable product LCAs.

This provides actionable insights into environmental impacts across product value chains while adhering to common governing standards. Additionally, the tool is built on open-source technologies and features a cloud-agnostic architecture, making it easily deployable across various cloud platforms.

Suranjan Chatterjee, Global Head of the Strategic Capabilities Group at TCS, commented, "TCS Product Life Cycle Profiler will help our clients identify the changes needed to make their product value chains more sustainable and advance their climate goals. It offers unique granular insights that enable companies to pinpoint accurate and actionable intervention points, whether it's a change in suppliers or the impetus to create entirely new product lines aligned with a low-carbon economy."

Eric Mieras, Managing Director and CEO of PRé Sustainability, added, "Our partnership with TCS addresses the growing need for customers to have reliable and transparent environmental footprint information for products on a large scale. It brings together PRé's expertise in the field of LCA and TCS' innovative technology capabilities."
