Key Takeaways

  • Porsche and Hydro collaborate to reduce the carbon footprint of aluminium used in sports car production.

  • The partnership focuses on low-carbon primary aluminium and high-recycled-content secondary aluminium.

  • This collaboration aims to achieve a carbon-neutral value chain for Porsche by 2030.

Porsche and Norwegian aluminium company Hydro have strengthened their partnership to deliver sustainable aluminium solutions for Porsche's sports car production.

The agreement specifies the use of both low-carbon primary aluminium and secondary aluminium with a high proportion of recycled content.

This collaboration supports Porsche's goal of achieving a carbon-neutral value chain for its new cars by 2030. Aluminium plays a larger role in lightweight construction, particularly important for electric vehicles. The Taycan, for instance, has an aluminium body structure that makes up roughly 30% of its total weight.

Reducing the Environmental Footprint

The partnership focuses on two key areas:

  • Low-Carbon Primary Aluminium: Hydro will produce this aluminium in Norway using renewable energy sources, primarily hydropower. This largely reduces the carbon footprint compared to the global average for primary aluminium production.

  • High-Recycled-Content Secondary Aluminium: Porsche and Hydro aim to increase their use of recycled aluminium derived from post-consumer scrap. By 2027/2028, Hydro expects to supply secondary aluminium with a minimum of 75% recycled content.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

“The collaboration with Hydro is an important milestone for Porsche on our path to decarbonisation along the entire value chain,” says Barbara Frenkel, Executive Board Member for Procurement at Porsche AG. “The partnership is also making a contribution to responsible procurement because Hydro’s aluminium supply chain is transparent.”

Eivind Kallevik, President and CEO of Norsk Hydro, says: "Our collaboration with pioneers like Porsche supports Hydro’s ambition to change the game for sustainability in the aluminium industry. Together, in this long-term strategic partnership, Hydro and Porsche will push forward innovative solutions and business models, aiming to drive decarbonization and circularity in the automotive industry,”
