Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, has three options when it comes to flight booking now: 1) using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), 2) certified climate protection projects, 3) a mix of both. Customers of the airline could contribute to minimising the carbon emissions of their flights with just a click.

The first option is SAF, which is currently made from biogenic waste and cuts CO2 emissions immediately. Another option is to use high-quality carbon offset projects managed by myclimate, a non-profit company in Germany and other nations worldwide. These contribute to measurable climate protection by lowering CO2 levels and increasing the local quality of life and biodiversity. The third option is a combination of the first two options.

During the booking process, customers could choose an option. Payment is made during the flight booking, making CO2-neutral travel much more convenient for passengers.

The same service will be available for other Lufthansa Group airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS, in the second quarter of 2022.

Christina Foerster, Member of the Lufthansa Group's Executive Board, responsible for Customer, IT & Corporate Responsibility, said:

"We continue to invest more than ever in the quality and sustainability of our flights. We already are the largest buyer of SAF in Europe and offer the most comprehensive range of ways to fly CO2-neutral. And we have now integrated this into the booking process. We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to save CO2. People not only want to fly and discover more of the world – but they also want to protect it. We believe in this way an important contribution to do this can be made. I am convinced this will inspire more and more passengers to travel sustainably."

Only about 1% of passengers have taken advantage of Lufthansa's long-standing carbon-neutral flight option. This new offer, which will be accessible for booking tickets on mobile devices as well and is part of the Lufthansa Group's product drive for environmentally friendly travel.

The Group intends to provide clients with much more environmentally friendly travel options in the future years. The digital solution "Compensaid," developed by Lufthansa Innovation Hub in 2019, serves as the foundation for this new service.
