Accenture and Swisscom teamed up on a climate strategy to cut Swisscom's emissions and its customers' emissions by one million tonnes of carbon by 2025, which is equivalent to two per cent of Switzerland's total carbon emissions.

With new sustainability goals for its corporate decision-making and product development processes, Swisscom hopes to reach carbon neutrality earlier than anticipated.

Accenture assisted Swisscom in integrating an evolving interpretation of an emissions type, known as Scope 4, that may be incorporated into the company's strategy to help customers avoid or reduce emissions.

Res Witschi, head of sustainable digitization, Swisscom, said:

"We strive every day to be more ambitious with our sustainability commitments and generate more impact for our company, our people, our customers and the environment. With Accenture’s industry knowledge and decarbonisation insights, we raised our climate target and continue to be a sustainability leader in the telco space.”

Accenture also assisted Swisscom in exploring methods for adopting technologies within the new Scope 4 category, which can aid in further reducing customers' carbon emissions.

It includes technologies such as AI-driven analytics, cloud, 5G, and IoT for faster and higher capacity data transmission, as well as remote device administration and control.

Swisscom is simultaneously addressing environmental concerns and its profit line by tackling Scope 4 emissions. In fact, according to research conducted by Accenture, businesses with a greater sustainability performance across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) indices also perform better financially.

Stephan Schneider, managing director, Accenture, said:

"Technology is a critical driver for improving sustainability, helping to accelerate transitions to net zero, build sustainable organisations, embrace responsible value chains, and provide sustainable choices for customers. Swisscom is positively impacting the planet by combining technology solutions to enable a reduction across their emissions while also driving business value. The company can boost their business by offering customers a larger number of green products and services to choose from to reduce their emissions.”
