Enrollment for the 2024 growing season of BASF's e3 Sustainable Cotton programme is now open, offering an exceptional opportunity for cotton growers.

This innovative initiative, from seed to bale, offers a fully traceable and transparent sustainable cotton supply chain overseen by dedicated Stoneville and FiberMax cotton cultivators in the United States.

Participating growers who join the e3 Sustainable Cotton programme commit to monitoring eight on-farm environmental and social parameters, which include aspects such as water usage, pesticide management, soil preservation, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for each cotton bale they produce.

Self-enrollment is available until December 31, 2023. In an exciting addition for this season, the programme now offers concierge enrollment, where growers can receive assistance from specialised enrollment experts in completing their sustainability questionnaire and uploading bale information from the gin.

The concierge enrollment period will remain open from January 1 through March 31, 2024. The programme offers seamless integration with existing farm management systems and local gin software platforms, ensuring that growers can participate with confidence, knowing that their data remains secure.

Ray Daniels, Seed Sustainability Manager at BASF, emphasised the increasing significance of transparency in today's context.

He said, "Consumer demand for knowing the origin of cotton and textiles is on the rise, and the e3 Sustainable Cotton programme equips our growers with the means to both showcase the sustainability of their operations and provide transparency to the textile supply chain. Participation in the e3 Sustainable Cotton programme not only enables growers to unlock their value potential but also demonstrates their genuine commitment to sustainability to potential buyers."

In 2022, growers who were part of the e3 Sustainable Cotton programme achieved remarkable milestones in sustainable cotton production:

  • Produced a staggering 203 million pounds, equivalent to 1,12,082 traceable bales of sustainable FiberMax and Stoneville cotton.

  • Preserved 4,89,653 U.S. tonnes of soil from erosion on 3,60,691 acres.

  • Reduced carbon emissions by a significant 3,691 U.S. tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

  • 79% of e3 Sustainable Cotton growers adopted reduced tillage practices.

  • 73% of e3 Sustainable Cotton growers bolstered carbon sequestration.
