The partnership will reduce carbon emissions and produce chemicals more sustainably.
Captured CO2 is used to produce personal care products.
BASF, a German multinational chemical company, and Acies Bio, a leading European microbial biotechnology company, have collaborated to streamline a method of producing fatty alcohols.
Fatty alcohols is a type of chemical used in the production of personal and home care products (soaps and shampoos) and household cleaners.
Acies Bio's new technology, OneCarbonBio, uses methanol ( a type of alcohol made from captured carbon dioxide (CO2)) to produce fatty alcohols. This technique uses biotechnology, which means engineered microbes or tiny organisms are used to create chemicals sustainably.
The partnership between the companies will scale up this process. Acies Bio brings in its biotech expertise, while BASF leverages its experience in making large quantities of chemicals and global connections.
This project also helps BASF make its supply chains more sustainable by using renewable resources like CO2-based methanol and driving the sustainable production of personal and home care ingredients.
“Biotechnology complements our chemistry to create a more sustainable future,” said Dr. Matthias Maase, Global Director Sustainability, Care Chemicals BASF. “We are very pleased to have found the right partner in Acies Bio to further develop this innovation at an early stage. With a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, our research scope of the partnership covers the entire chain from production strain development to large scale manufacturing. This will be of benefit to our customers in Personal Care, Home Care and I&I and Industrial Formulators worldwide.”
Dr. Gregor Kosec, Director of R&D at Acies Bio, said, “Partnering with BASF marks an important milestone, reflecting a significant recognition of Acies Bio's R&D efforts. By combining our advanced microbial production strains and the OneCarbonBio platform with BASF’s proven process development and supply chain expertise, we are poised to bring our technologies to a global scale. This collaboration demonstrates the transformative potential of Acies Bio’s microbial innovations to drive net-zero production of specialty and industrial chemicals.”
