The climate crisis poses significant challenges for the airline industry, and Turkish Airlines' recognition as a sustainability leader demonstrates its commitment to green growth.
The World Finance Sustainability Awards 2022 named Turkish Airlines the "Most Sustainable Flag Carrier Airline."
In the magazine's summer issue, the airline operator revealed its sustainability strategy, which included expanding its new generation fleet with more ecologically friendly aircraft and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions through its fuel-saving policies.
Prof. Dr Ahmet Bolat, chairman of the board and the executive committee of Turkish Airlines, said, "Sustainability is central to our strategy for growth and profitability as we aim to keep adding value for our stakeholders while enhancing our products and services."
Since 2008, the company has undertaken over a hundred operational optimisation projects to minimise its carbon footprint, yet the pandemic has not stifled its innovative spirit.
In 2021 alone, Turkish Airlines saved over 37,000 tonnes of fuel, which is the equivalent of reducing 116,800 tonnes of greenhouse gases. In addition, the airline's first flight utilising sustainable aviation fuel took off in 2022.
In line with the company's principle of 'continuous improvement', more innovation is on the horizon. "Taking into account the expectations of our stakeholders and related parties," Bolat said, "we will be integrating sustainability into every field in which we operate, working day in, day out in line with the vision, mission, and general strategy of our airline."
