Pertamina Produces First-Rate Green Refinery Products

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), a Pertamina subsidiary dedicated to refining and petrochemical endeavours, is resolute in its dedication to producing refined products of exceptional quality while prioritising environmental sustainability.
This commitment is exemplified through the Cilacap Refinery's Cilacap Blue Sky Project (PLBC) and the Balongan Refinery's Balongan Blue Sky Refinery Project (KLBB), both contributing top-tier fuels to Jakarta and its neighbouring regions.
The Cilacap Refinery marked a significant milestone with the completion of the Cilacap Blue Sky Project (PLBC) in 2019. The project propelled the production of gasoline with sulfur content equivalent to EURO IV standards, a substantial advancement from the preceding EURO II level.
Notably, the sulfur content in a portion of the refinery's fuel output dipped below 50 ppm, a drastic reduction from the former 150–300 ppm range. This achievement correlates with an 83% decrease in SOx emissions per litre, translating to a reduction from 0.68 grams to 0.11 grams.
Within the portfolio of products emanating from the Cilacap Refinery are Solar, Pertamax, Pertalite, Pertamina Turbo, Pertamina Dex, petrochemical derivatives, and lube bases. These fuels and LPG products are tailored to meet the energy demands of Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. The Cilacap Refinery, boasting Indonesia's largest processing capacity at 348 thousand barrels per day (KPBD), stands as a testament to industry leadership.
KPI's CEO, Taufik Aditiyawarman, elaborated on the completion of Phase I of the Green Refinery project in February 2022 at the Cilacap Refinery. This milestone enabled the production of environmentally friendly goods, including Green Diesel, adhering to EURO V sulfur content standards.
Noteworthy is the achievement of a 2500-barrel-per-day (BPD) production capacity and the attainment of the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) for the refinery. Further elevating its environmental commitment, the Cilacap Refinery succeeded in crafting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Taufik detailed the successful trial flight that employed SAF 2.4J, a blend containing 2.4% Bioaviation Turbine Fuel, showcasing its reduced emissions profile compared to Fossil Avtur.
Taufik extended his insights to encompass Pertamina's broader refining initiatives. The Balongan Refinery, situated in Indramayu, West Java, distinguishes itself with the highest Nelson Complexity Index (NCI) across Pertamina's refineries.
This index serves as a gauge of refinery complexity, with a higher value indicating superior production efficiency and product quality. Presently, the Pertamina Balongan Refinery boasts an NCI of 11.9, setting a benchmark. Remarkably, its capacity has risen from 125 KBPD to 150 KBPD, propelling the production of diverse products, including Pertalite, Pertamax, Pertamax Turbo, Solar, Pertamina Dex, LPG, Propylene, Avtur, and speciality chemical items such as Gas Oil for Antifoam (GO Foam).
The Balongan Refinery introduced the Balongan Blue Sky Refinery (KLBB) unit in 2005, embracing eco-friendly, lead-free fuel regulations. This unit transforms Low Octane Mogas Component (LOMC) from other refineries into High Octane Mogas Component (HOMC), thereby replacing lead/tetraethyl lead (TEL) and bolstering gasoline quality.
Among other accomplishments is the ability of the Balongan Refinery to produce Pertamina Dex products featuring a maximum sulfur content of 10 ppm, aligning with EURO V standards. This achievement corresponds to a remarkable 98% reduction in SO4 emissions, highlighting the enhanced sulfur quality's positive environmental impact.
The ongoing Balikpapan RDMP project is another crucial endeavour, aiming to raise processing capacity from 260 KBPD to 360 KBPD while concurrently upgrading quality to EURO V standards, accentuating the commitment to environmental betterment.
KPI maintains its dedication to the energy transition, consistently crafting high-quality and environmentally conscious refined products, including innovative plant-based fuels. The imminent engagement in the petrochemical sector further underscores KPI's multifaceted contributions.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, affirmed the company's commitment to presenting innovations and refining breakthroughs as a gift to the nation on Indonesia's 78th Independence Day. These achievements reverberate with positivity, optimising refineries and fostering progressively eco-friendly products, resonating with the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) aspiration.
Fadjar emphasised that achieving NZE necessitates collective participation across Pertamina's entire spectrum of operations, from upstream to downstream. Pertamina, at the forefront of the energy transition, remains steadfast in its support of the Net Zero Emission 2060 goal, aligning its endeavours with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and robust Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation.
