Peel Ports Cuts Emissions by One-Third in Three Years
In a remarkable display of commitment to sustainability, Peel Ports Group has announced a substantial reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions across its port facilities, achieving a nearly one-third decrease since 2020.
This impressive achievement is unveiled in the group's comprehensive 51-page ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) report—a document that stands out as one of the most comprehensive of its kind among UK port operators of similar stature.
Peel Ports, the United Kingdom's second-largest port operator, has released this report as a testament to their dedication to sustainable port operations.
Independently verified data attests to the fact that the group has successfully curtailed Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across its port operations by an impressive 32% when compared to its 2020 baseline, employing a market-based accounting approach.
Notably, the company has managed to reduce its Scope 1 emissions across its port operations by an astounding 47% during this period. The switch from diesel to biofuels in straddle carriers and other equipment, as well as the electrification of a remarkable 97% of the group's vehicle fleet, greatly aided this reduction.
Claudio Veritiero, Chief Executive Officer at Peel Ports Group, expressed his pride in the organisation's efforts, stating, "As one of the UK's leading port operators and a significant employer in our operating regions, we recognise our crucial role in advancing the sustainability agenda."
Veritiero added, "We took an industry-leading stance when we announced our commitment to achieve net-zero status by 2040. This level of ambition permeates all aspects of our sustainability strategy, including our dedication to equality, diversity, inclusion, and social causes."
The report serves as a pivotal milestone in Peel Ports Group's journey toward sustainable growth, positioning the organisation to build upon its achievements while firmly embedding sustainability as a driving force for future success.
This annual report equips Peel Ports Group with the tools to effectively monitor and realise its ESG aspirations as it aspires to become the foremost sustainable port entity in the United Kingdom.
Within the report, readers will find a comprehensive breakdown of investments and initiatives aimed at reaching the ambitious net-zero goal by 2040, spanning all of the company's locations in the UK and Ireland—two years after the company initially declared its audacious net-zero plans.
