NYK has recently entered into a time charter agreement with Siemens Gamesa, a global leader in wind energy solutions, for the use of a crew transfer vessel (CTV) to support an offshore wind power generation facility.

NYK will own the CTV, while it will be managed by Hokuyo Kaiun Co., Ltd., a Hokkaido-based company belonging to the NYK Group. The CTV will transport workers to the offshore wind power generation facility at Ishikari Bay New Port, which is expected to commence commercial operation in December 2023.

The offshore wind farm project at Ishikari Bay New Port is being developed by Green Power Ishikari LLC, a special purpose company (SPC) established by Green Power Investment Corporation. The project is expected to construct, operate, and maintain 14 units of SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa in a sea area of about 500 hectares.

Once the offshore wind turbines are operational, the CTV will transport workers between the offshore work site facilities and the onshore base for maintenance work.

As the construction of offshore wind power generation facilities in Japan is set to begin in earnest around 2026, the CTV market is expected to grow to over 100 vessels within approximately 20 years. The NYK Group's first CTV operation in Japan aims to establish a foothold for further expansion into the offshore wind power generation business, which is expected to grow in the future.

CTV is a type of aluminium catamaran that typically ranges in length from 20 to 40 meters. These vessels are designed for high-speed operation and are equipped with stability equipment to ensure the safe and comfortable transport of technicians and crews to and from offshore wind power construction, maintenance, and operation sites. CTVs play a critical role in the efficient and reliable transport of personnel to and from offshore wind farms.
