Neste and Braskem Partner for Sustainable Polymer Production

Uses certification to ensure the sustainability of products sourced for production.
Neste RE feedstocks reduce plastic waste and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Neste, a leading producer of sustainable fuels based in Finland, has reached an agreement with Braskem, a global petrochemical company operating in Brazil, to supply sustainable materials for producing plastics and chemicals.
Braskem will sell products made from renewable and recycled feedstocks in South America by the end of 2024 under its Wenew brand.
This will allow Braskem to produce sustainable products that meet high industry quality standards. The materials the company will use include Neste RE. This comprises two types of feedstocks: first, recycled feedstocks made from plastic waste through chemical recycling; and second, renewable feedstock made from renewable materials such as used cooking oil.
These feedstocks can also be used to produce food packaging products. Brazil's health agency, ANVISA, said that products that are made through chemical recycling can meet regulations without special approvals.
On the other side, they have environmental benefits, too. Chemical recycling will reduce plastic waste, and renewable feedstock lowers greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels in production.
“This is a very important moment for the industry. We're introducing a new solution that will adhere to the industry’s high-quality standards while ensuring sustainability right from the start of the value chain. This partnership with Neste is a significant milestone in our journey towards a circular economy,” said Fabiana Quiroga, Director of Circular Economy at Braskem in South America.
Braskem will use certification to ensure the sustainable sourcing of these materials, which monitors the entire production process and builds customers' confidence in the sustainability of the sourced materials.
“We are excited to welcome Braskem as our partner in advancing the transformation of the plastics and chemicals industry towards more sustainable solutions,” says Jeroen Verhoeven, Commercial Director for Polymers and Chemicals at Neste. “We are looking forward to seeing our Neste RE solution in action in South America, reducing the dependence on virgin fossil feedstock in the production of polymers and chemicals.”
