  • Nigeria's mobile telecommunications company introduces plastic-free SIM cards.

  • The goal is to help reduce the plastic menace in the country and encourage Nigerians to adopt sustainable practices.

MTN Nigeria, a leading mobile operator in Nigeria, has introduced sustainable, biodegradable SIM cards. These cards are plastic-free and made of paper.

The company supports environmental sustainability and commits to reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions in its business. This goal aligns with its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. To this end, it has partnered with Secure ID, a sustainability-driven local company, to produce these biodegradable SIM cards.

This initiative is part of MTN's efforts to be more environmentally friendly, encourage Nigerians to switch to sustainable practices, and support the nation in its fight against climate change by reducing waste and promoting recycling.

It is estimated that Nigeria could have over 200 million plastic SIM cards by the end of 2025. This consequential increase in plastic is a menace to everyone in Nigeria. MTN's new initiative is expected to impact and help address this growing issue of plastic waste.

“Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility, as well as our dedication to reducing waste, supporting local Nigerian vendors and integrating sustainability into business operations as well as the daily lives of the people”, said Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer.

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager, Sustainability and Shared Value, commented, “Our people and the environment where they live drives the innovative measures we take. The launch of our recyclable SIM cards embodies our commitment to sustainability, encouraging our customers to make eco-friendly choices, reducing waste and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for Nigerians.”
