Indian Airline IndiGo to Reduce Carbon Emissions

On World Environment Day, IndiGo, India's biggest carrier, is undertaking innovative initiatives to cut water and fuel use on flights. On 200 flights, the airline successfully tested a new water faucet, which cut water use by 5.4 ltr/hr.
IndiGo presently offers more than 1,500 flights every day, with a 98-minute average flight time. This new system will save water consumption by 8.82 litres every flight, saving 13,230 litres per day.
This change will also address the issue of water availability on long flights. Shorter flights will require less uplifting water, resulting in fuel savings and a reduction in carbon emissions of 930.75 Kg CO2/m3 per year.
The airline has been working toward an integrated, long-term strategy to aid day-to-day operations. IndiGo will be the first airline in the world to implement these water conservation measures on board.
Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, President & Chief Operating Officer, IndiGo, said:
"As a leading airline, we have a special responsibility towards the environment and ESG is, therefore, one of our top corporate goals. We are in the process of institutionalising a sustainable approach to operations over the last few years, where-in sustainability is being integrated with day-to-day operations. With this new initiative, we aim to conserve water and significantly reduce carbon emissions through fuel savings. These consistent initiatives will contribute to a healthy ecosystem for our future generations.”
IndiGo Green, the company's first ESG report, was recently released to present its viewpoint on good governance and assess environmental and social performance.
IndiGo is India's first airline to focus on good governance and improving the country's environmental and social performance. From FY15 to FY21, the airline has reduced carbon emissions by 1,478,359 tonnes.
When compared to FY 2016, the airline hopes to lower CO2 emissions by 18 per cent per ASK in FY 23. IndiGo aspires to be the world's premier airline, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability.
