Hogs Back Brewery has been one of just five national finalists in the prestigious Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) Sustainable Business Award 2024.

Here is a glimpse into the brewery's impressive initiatives:

Reducing Waste

  • They divert approximately 250 tonnes of spent grain for local animal feed, minimising waste.

  • Over 14 tonnes of glass and 12 tonnes of cardboard are recycled, along with agricultural plastic waste.

  • Gift pack redesigns eliminated over 3,500 plastic handles, with boxes made from 100% recycled and FSC-certified materials.

  • Eco-friendly pub clips, 100% recyclable and FSC-certified, are used for limited-edition beers.

Energy Efficiency

  • The installation of 120 solar panels in 2023 generated 9.7 MWh, powering roughly 30 brews on their 10-hectolitre plant.

  • Three 5.2kw batteries store excess solar energy, further reducing reliance on traditional power sources.

Water Conservation

  • Updated brewing cleaning processes have saved over 130,000 litres of water.

Community Focus

  • The Tap, the brewery's restaurant, sources food and drink from within a 30-mile radius whenever possible.

Reusable Options

  • Over 20,000 single-use plastic bottles were saved by offering reusable glass flagons in the brewery shop.

  • Their annual Hop Harvest Party weekend saw over 15,000 pints served in reusable plastic cups, eliminating single-use options. Also, 7,000 meals used compostable plates and cutlery, and even the drink tokens were crafted from recycled fishing nets.

While Hogs Back Brewery may not have won the top prize, they are undeniably proud of the positive impact they are making on the environment. Their commitment to sustainability is evident through these impactful initiatives.
