DNP Cuts CO2 with New Paper Packaging for Photo Media
Dai Nippon Printing Co Ltd
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is taking an important step towards a greener future by switching to paper packaging for its photo media products.
This innovative move is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by an impressive 69%, or roughly 45 tonnes per year.
Industry First for Dye-Sublimation Printing
DNP's initiative is the first of its kind within the dye-sublimation thermal transfer photo media industry. The new paper packaging will initially be implemented for photo media produced in Japan starting May 2024, with a planned rollout to overseas production facilities soon after.
Global Leader in Photo Media Makes Sustainable Choice
DNP's photo media enjoys a leading global market share. Used for photo prints and ID photos in stores worldwide, particularly in America, Europe, and Japan, this switch demonstrates DNP's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Benefits Beyond Sustainability
The switch to paper packaging offers several advantages:
Reduced CO2 Footprint: By replacing petroleum-based plastic with a renewable resource like paper, DNP expects to achieve a substantial 69% decrease in CO2 emissions, translating to approximately 45 tonnes saved annually.
Improved Unpacking Experience: The paper packaging simplifies the unpacking process for customers.
Enhanced Logistics and Storage: Designing smaller cardboard boxes for the photo media optimises logistical efficiency and saves storage space.
Automated Packaging Maintains Quality: DNP has developed a unique automated packaging machine to ensure the same high quality and production speed as with the previous plastic packaging.
Leading the Way in Sustainable Photo Printing
DNP Corporate Officer Mr. Kazuo Murakami said, "DNP is committed to providing our customers with quality products and services while minimising our impact on the environment. We hope that this new initiative will help encourage everyone who uses photo media to make sustainable choices.”
DNP recognises the increasing volume of photo media shipments and is committed to minimising its environmental impact. Since 2022, the company has been actively exploring this switch and developing automated packaging solutions. This latest development marks a critical step towards a more sustainable future for photo printing.
Reduced plastic use across DNP's photo media manufacturing sites will contribute to a smaller environmental footprint and support the transition to a decarbonised society.
