DJSI World Recognises American's Green Efforts
American Airlines Group Inc
American Airlines has achieved a notable milestone by securing a spot on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the first time, standing as one of only two passenger airlines featured in this prestigious index.
Additionally, the airline maintains its position on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the third consecutive year.
The DJSI World Index is a compilation of global sustainability leaders identified by S&P Global through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Comprising the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, the selection is based on comprehensive assessments of long-term economic, environmental, and social criteria.
Robert Isom, American's CEO, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, "Inclusion on the DJSI World recognises our efforts to enhance operational reliability, invest in our team members, and operate with a greater focus on sustainability."
Operational Excellence
American Airlines has established itself as an industry leader in operational reliability, boasting top rankings in on-time departures year-to-date and surpassing major U.S. network competitors in completion factor. Customer satisfaction, measured by the Likelihood to Recommend (LTR) score, reached a record high in 2022, based on approximately 3 million customer surveys.
Team Member Investments
Demonstrating commitment to its workforce, American Airlines successfully concluded a four-year agreement with its pilots in 2023. This agreement, negotiated with the Allied Pilots Association (APA), will bring over $9 billion in compensation and quality-of-life benefits to the airline's 15,000 pilots. Furthermore, the airline earned a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index, reflecting its dedication to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.
Sustainability Initiatives
In leading the industry towards sustainability, American Airlines set a groundbreaking 2035 carbon intensity target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The airline has also entered into an innovative offtake agreement with Infinium, a Texas-based company, for the production of an advanced form of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This agreement supports Infinium's efforts to produce SAF from waste carbon dioxide and renewable power.
Notably, American is the inaugural customer of Graphyte, a carbon removal startup backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. This collaboration focuses on a pioneering method of permanent carbon removal that is both energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to existing approaches.
