Carbon Footprint Plastics and litter Reduce Reuse Recycle Water Waste Deforestation Who is the project for? This new initiative is available to teachers and students alike. Whether you are a learner looking to expand your skills and knowledge to be able to discuss important environmental issues successfully in English, or you are an educator who wants to offer their students an international project on a topic they really care about – there’s something for everyone. How can you access these resources? Educators and learners will be able to access ready-to-use English language resources based on these themes and engage with ongoing conversations across our digital channels. Speak Out for Sustainability content will be shared on the dedicated webpage. We will also share these resources on our Pearson English Facebook and Instagram channels, using the hashtag #speakout_for_sustainability. What type of content can you expect? Each theme will have a short introduction video to inspire conversations. A Useful Vocabulary Video will also explain some of the key language that is going to come up in the theme, to help make sure students know what to focus on. Students will also have: a digital worksheet containing reading, video and interview tasks for them to complete; a reading task for students aged 16+; a 3–5-minute interview with an expert with first-hand experience of the effects of climate change; a 5 top tips video on how to take action; a video or text on What They’re Doing, explaining an inspirational teen or young adult doing something to help the environment; a BBC Studios video with follow up questions; a video challenge that aims to inspire action and integrate learners into the project; a live class with our learning guide Harry and a quick fire quiz: what have we learned? A video with 10 questions related to the theme. Find out more! About the Speakers: Jane Forrest, Director of Product Marketing, Pearson English Speak Out for Sustainability speaker 3 Jane is Global Marketing Director for English Language Teaching at Pearson. She started her career as a teacher and teacher trainer with the British Council in Madrid. From here, she moved into the world of ELT publishing, where she has held roles in marketing and digital publishing, as well as marketing intelligence, research and training, joining Pearson in 2017. An English language graduate, she also holds a Master’s Degree in online and distance education, and is based in London, UK.
Praveen Goplan, Environmental Sustainability Manager, BBC Studios, Speak Out for Sustainability speaker 1Praveen works on Sustainability in its widest sense, covering all three elements – people, planet and profits. As in-house subject matter expert at BBC Studios, he helps embed sustainability in various activities including business operations, facility management, and the production of programmes, live events and merchandise. Previously at the charitable arm of a specialist energy, water and infrastructure investment firm, he worked with policymakers, capital providers and companies to help develop and finance climate change solutions. Before moving into the commercial and charitable sectors, Praveen was a researcher at the Environmental Change Institute, Univ. of Oxford, where he worked on energy efficiency, and the Faculties of Health Sciences, and Nursing, Univ. of Sydney where he worked on examining Australian Government social services. Praveen holds an Environmental MSc (Oxford) and First Class (honours) BSc (Sydney). Erika Webb-Hughes, VP Sustainability, Pearson Speak Out for Sustainability speaker 2Erika is the Vice President of Sustainability at Pearson, with over 20 years of education practice, policy development, and government affairs experience. She believes learning is a lifelong pursuit to achieve growth, contribution to community, and fulfillment. When not advocating for equitable access to high quality education for all, she spends her time practicing the art of motherhood with her two teenage daughters who are teaching her everyday to see the world with new eye.
Harry Waters, founder of Renewable English Speak Out for Sustainability speaker 4 Harry Waters has been involved in English teaching for over 14 years. He is a trainer for the ELTon award winning Pearson and BBC Live Classes project. His passion for teaching and obsession with sustainability led him to create Renewable English an online English course, providing free classes and materials aimed at raising climate change awareness across the globe. Harry is also a passionate teacher trainer. He describes himself as an imperfect environmentalist with a love of flags and funky second-hand shirts. You’ll have the opportunity to take part in the conversation with Pearson English, BBC Studios and educators and students from around the world.
