AkzoNobel Switches to Renewables in LatAm
AkzoNobel's factories across Latin America have hit a big goal—they are now running entirely on renewable electricity.
This move, achieved last year, is part of the company's plan to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels.
This achievement in Latin America follows similar successes in North America in early 2023 and Europe in early 2022.
Daniel Campos, Director of AkzoNobel’s Decorative Paints Latin America division, said, "We're very proud to have successfully switched over to 100% renewable electricity and give further momentum to the company’s drive to transition all of its sites globally."
Making this change involved installing 1,580 panels in Recife, Brazil, and 4,640 panels in Colombia. These panels now provide a big chunk of the energy needed at these sites.
“As the first paints and coatings company to set science-based sustainability targets, we’re fully focused on fulfilling our ambitions, and this latest achievement in Latin America is another important step in the right direction,” says Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s Director of Sustainability.
“We also continue to engage with suppliers and develop sustainable solutions to help our customers reduce their own carbon footprint.”
They are not stopping there. By the end of 2023, 82 of AkzoNobel's locations worldwide were using renewable electricity, with 31 sites also using solar panels to help out.
