BSI Publishes New Standard for Lighting Industry Circularity

BSI's foremost goal is to help various industries transition to circular economy practices.
The new standard guides manufacturers in different ways in which they can reduce their environmental impact in the lighting industry.
The British Standards Institution (BSI), the national standards body of the United Kingdom, has published a new standard to help manufacturers in the lighting industry transition to a more circular economy.
The new standard, BS 8887-221:2024, provides guidance on remanufacturing lighting products, restoring them to their original condition or better, and preparing them for resale. The ultimate goal is to reduce waste, conserve resources, and reuse products.
Research shows that remanufacturing can cut emissions by up to 39%. This shift will help the lighting industry become more sustainable.
Another study notes that 72% of consumers are more willing to buy remanufactured products if the manufacturers can guarantee the products' good quality. It shows that such products already have demand in the market, thus encouraging the producers to manufacture more and supporting a circular economy.

According to the World Resources Institute, approximately 45% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are due to product use and manufacturing. The only way to reduce this is to facilitate a speedy transition to circular economy practices.
Through guidance from BSI, manufacturers, designers, and customers will learn how to extend the life of lighting products, thereby reducing the use of new raw materials, cutting down energy consumption, and lowering the environmental impact of lighting production.

Sebastiaan Van Dort, Director of Sustainability and Energy, BSI, said: “While the benefits of transitioning to a circular economy are clear, many organizations still face challenges in embedding these practices into their everyday operations. The launch of this guidance (BS 8887-221:2024) is intended to play a central role in helping the lighting sector reduce waste, minimize the demand for virgin materials, and lower energy and resource expenditure through remanufacturing.”
As businesses increasingly seek to protect the planet's future, this standard is designed to provide practical solutions to key challenges in the lighting industry and help society reach the tipping point where circularity becomes the more feasible choice, ultimately accelerating progress toward a sustainable future.”
