  • The company's pulp production processes are sustainable and follow responsible forest management practices.

  • The fluff pulp made in Brazil is more sustainable than that in the US, says their recent study.

Klabin, a Brazilian recycling company, has conducted a study to understand the environmental impact of its pulp products, mainly focusing on their carbon footprint and lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

GHG emissions from a product's lifecycle are produced from its raw materials extraction to its end-of-life management. In this context, the recycling company measured the GHG emissions of its fluff pulp, from forest cultivation to manufacturing and transportation and compared the emissions of its PineFluff® and PineFluff eXcel® products to fluff pulp made in the Southeastern United States, particularly in Georgia.

According to the company, its PineFluff® has 62% lower GHG emissions, and PineFluff eXcel® has 64% lower GHG emissions than US-made pulp. Other companies, such as ACV Brasil and SGS Brasil, were involved in the study to analyse, test, and verify the processes. It was conducted in accordance with international standards, such as the GHG Protocol and ISO.

Klabin's products have lower GHG emissions and a reduced carbon footprint for three reasons: firstly, they follow responsible forest management practices in growing trees; secondly, the company uses renewable energy sources in its production processes; and lastly, its production facilities are sustainable, energy-efficient, and modern.

The pulp is produced at Klabin's Ortigueira Unit in Paraná. It is a highly absorbent material used in a range of premium products, such as diapers, sanitary pads, and wet wipes and is known for its liquid retention properties, making it an important material in less commoditised, high-value markets.
