The European Rental Association (ERA) has released Version 3.0 of its Sustainability KPI Framework, marking a major advancement in helping rental companies improve their sustainability reporting and match the guidelines of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Developed in partnership with epi Consulting, the updated framework provides a clear path for rental companies to meet growing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) expectations. It includes an Excel-based KPI list and detailed guidance slides, making it easier for companies to select and apply the right indicators for their operations.

First introduced in 2021 and revised in 2023, the ERA Sustainability KPI Framework was built specifically for the rental industry. Version 3.0 enhances its usefulness by combining key EU sustainability standards, including the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the Voluntary Standard for Micro-Enterprises (VSME). These updates ensure that the framework remains practical while addressing the latest regulatory requirements.

Tailored for All Company Sizes

The new framework is designed to be flexible, offering four distinct reporting paths:

  • Basic KPIs for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

  • Comprehensive KPIs for SMEs

  • Basic KPIs for Large Rental Companies

  • Comprehensive KPIs for Large Rental Companies

Each company is encouraged to choose one list based on its size, reporting maturity, and sustainability ambitions. The Basic KPI lists are ideal for businesses just beginning their CSRD-aligned journey, focusing on core metrics like Scope 1 and 2 emissions, workforce data, and waste generation. The comprehensive lists take reporting a step further by including Scope 3 emissions, supply chain performance, and advanced workforce indicators.

Tools and Guidance for Smooth Adoption

Along with the KPI list, the ERA has provided a user-friendly Excel spreadsheet categorized into three ESG areas: Environmental, Social, and Governance. The spreadsheet covers key issues such as climate impact, circularity, pollution, and employee well-being.

The PowerPoint guidance deck offers insights into:

  • How the framework evolved from Version 2.0

  • The logic behind the categorization of indicators

  • How companies can select the most suitable list

  • Future trends in sustainability reporting and CSRD

The latest version was shaped through extensive consultation with leading rental companies across Europe. Their input helped identify the most material sustainability topics for the industry and refine the indicators to allow for transparent and comparable reporting.

Supporting Progress in a Changing Landscape

As stakeholders,  including investors, regulators, and customers, demand more credible and consistent sustainability disclosures, rental companies are under pressure to demonstrate measurable progress. The ERA Sustainability KPI Framework 3.0 positions companies to respond confidently and effectively.

Rental businesses looking to enhance their sustainability performance and reporting capabilities are encouraged to explore the new tools and start integrating the KPIs most relevant to their strategy.
