PowerCap, a Queensland-based supplier of sustainable energy equipment, has developed sodium-ion battery technology, a much safer and more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

After a decade of research into sustainable batteries, they developed this technology and plan to launch it to the market early next year.

The Power On Demand (POD) system is the company's main product and provides flexible energy storage solutions. It can charge electric vehicles, support solar energy systems, and power household appliances. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, these batteries are more sustainable, fully recyclable, and have a high energy capacity, lasting over 15 years.

They are made from sustainable materials such as recycled plastics, bio-waste, and salt derived from seawater desalination. This process is more sustainable and less invasive than lithium mining. Also, this technology allows users to store energy during cheaper off-peak times, manage energy efficiently, and reduce reliance on the grid.

This is one of the best options for making green energy more accessible, reducing electricity costs, and providing cleaner energy solutions for households and organisations.

CEO Dane El Safty said: "The PowerCap battery is an advanced energy storage system that utilises sodium-ion technology as a safer and more sustainable alternative to traditional lithium batteries. Our PODs are a major leap forward in energy storage, and we can't wait to see PowerCap make a real difference.

“As the energy sector continues to grapple with challenges surrounding grid reliability and the high cost of transitioning to renewables, we believe PowerCap will play a crucial role in moving us toward a cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy future for Australia and international markets.”
