Formula 1 Increases Investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The competitions will take place in regional hubs across Europe, the UAE, and the US to achieve energy efficiency.
The cars will use 100% advanced sustainable fuel starting in 2026.
Formula 1 (F1), the world's most prestigious motor racing competition, is increasing its investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in partnership with Qatar Airways.
This partnership builds on a previous collaboration F1 has with DHL. The objective is to cut emissions from air freight used during F1 events by 19% in the 2024 season compared to traditional fossil fuels.
This announcement is part of a larger plan to get to net zero emissions by 2030, lowering emissions by at least half from 2018 levels.
Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, said: “Today’s investment is the next step in our alternative fuels strategy which is central to delivering our Net Zero 2030 target. Through collaboration with our teams, the FIA and our partners, we are delivering on our promises to drive down the sports’ carbon emissions and drive forward technologies that can have an impact beyond Formula 1.
“This is the latest example of how stakeholders across the sport are aligned with our vision for a more sustainable F1, which we are thrilled to see.”
By 2026, F1 cars will race using sustainable fuel and adopt more sustainable practices, such as reducing emissions at European races by over 90% and using biofuel-powered trucks.
They are also working to streamline race schedules and lower carbon emissions in freight logistics. This goal is part of their broader strategy to reduce environmental impact through alternative fuels and sustainable operations.
