Catona Climate Supports Nature Regeneration Project in Colombia
Highlights the potential of Catona Climate's technical know-how and climate finance model.
An innovative technique is used to find out lands that have been degraded by decades of cattle ranching.
Catona Climate, a climate finance company, is supporting a nature restoration project in Antioquia, Colombia, to revive around 60,000 hectares of damaged land.
This project, in partnership with NatureRe, which develops carbon removal projects based on nature restoration, focuses on using Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) to help the land recover.
ANR deals with issues like invasive plants and poor land use. They find solutions by planting native plants, controlling grazing, and managing harmful grasses, intending to restore the environment.
"We're thrilled to partner with NatureRe and accelerate the restoration of large swaths of degraded lands in Colombia, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world," said Catona Climate CEO Tate Mill, "and one that is highly attractive for carbon market investment opportunities."
In the next 40 years, the project is expected to remove around 18 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere, equivalent to 400 tonnes per hectare. Catona Climate approaches this with careful planning and research to minimise risks, ensuring the project is attractive to potential investors. A major company is already on board to support it.
The project will seek ways to improve biodiversity and water quality, as well as reduce the risk of fires. It will also support the Colombian economy by providing jobs to local people, including educational programmes, with a special focus on empowering women in nearby communities.
"We've spent a decade in Colombia demonstrating ANR's power to help turn lands degraded by human activity into the thriving ecosystems they once were," said NatureRe CEO, Daniel Pfeifer. "Catona's transformative milestone investment will allow us to scale one of the most efficient nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change, restoring more areas more quickly and eventually fulfilling our vision to create an intact biodiversity corridor. We're excited to work closely with Catona and the key stakeholders they bring to the table – from enterprise buyers to innovative monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) technology partnerships."
