Arup Invests in Nature-Based Carbon Removal Projects in UK

The project is expected to generate 10,000 tonnes of carbon removal credits over 30 years.
A new model helps the private sector invest only upfront costs without acquiring land ownership.
The global engineering and design firm for sustainable development, Arup, has partnered with Nattergal and Wilder Carbon to invest £1 million in a nature restoration project at Boothby Wildland in Lincolnshire, UK.
This project will restore 67.5 hectares of degraded land with carbon-depleted soils, an efficient long-term carbon removal solution with many environmental benefits.
The partnership introduces a new funding model, where Arup provides upfront investment instead of buying land to support nature restoration and protection. The model promotes private sector involvement in nature restoration projects without land ownership.
The investment will generate 10,000 tonnes of carbon removal credits over 30 years, verified by Wilder Carbon in line with its Standard for Nature and Climate.

The objective is not just restoring natural habitats, but also helping in flood management and improving biodiversity, soil health, and water quality in the region, to enrich nature and local communities.
This will reinforce Arup's Net Zero Plan and its target of becoming a science-based net zero organisation by 2040. They also hope this model will set a benchmark and help other businesses invest in nature-based carbon removal projects.
Natasha Connolly, Net Zero Programme Director at Arup, said: "Nature-based carbon sequestration schemes are not happening at the speed needed, so we are proud to be taking a different approach to stimulate nature restoration.
"By investing upfront, we and our partners will accelerate the ambition and delivery of this nature-positive wilding scheme through responsible and scientifically backed methods while securing future carbon credits for Arup that support our journey to becoming a science-based net zero organisation by 2040."
