The supermarket giant aims to cut down on food waste. To achieve this, they have launched Zero Depack, a technology-driven programme that makes depackaging expired food easier.
Removing food from packaging for recycling used to be a time-consuming job for Walmart associates. Zero Depack improves this by using specialised machinery to quickly separate food from packaging. This innovation saves time for associates and helps create a cleaner waste stream.
Walmart has partnered with Denali, a leader in organic recycling, to implement Zero Depack in over 1,400 stores and Sam's Clubs. The technology used by Denali can separate up to 97% of trash from organic food waste, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
By facilitating the depackaging process, Walmart is building associate satisfaction and improving operational efficiency. Plus, the recovered food waste can be turned into valuable products, such as biosolids for agriculture.
