LyondellBasell Launches +LC to Reduce Emissions
LyondellBasell Industries NV
LyondellBasell has unveiled a remarkable expansion of its sustainable product offerings through the introduction of its innovative +LC (Low Carbon) solutions.
This cutting-edge range encompasses Intermediates and Derivatives (I&D) chemicals, all produced under the rigorous International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certified mass balance methodology.
Distinctive for being sourced from recycled and renewable feedstocks, these +LC solutions have been expertly crafted to empower businesses in their pursuit of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, all while maintaining the impeccable quality required for contemporary, sustainable living. They present a compelling proposition by significantly reducing carbon footprints compared to their fossil-based counterparts.
Kimberly Foley, the Executive Vice President of I&D and Refining at LyondellBasell, emphasised the company's deep commitment to sustainability, stating that "Sustainability is woven into the fabric of our business strategy."
She further underscored the significance of +LC solutions in assisting customers in achieving ambitious GHG emissions reduction targets and advancing product circularity.
These environmentally conscious solutions harness the power of renewable, bio-based, and recycled feedstocks to enable customers to curtail their Scope 3 GHG emissions. Leveraging their legacy of innovation, customer-centric approach, and unwavering focus on sustainability, LyondellBasell has meticulously engineered this product range to align with both the company's and its customers' sustainability aspirations.
LyondellBasell, building upon a legacy of 70 years of innovation and excellence in the I&D sector, has elevated its product portfolio with the introduction of the +LC product range.
This portfolio includes fundamental I&D offerings like styrene monomers, ethylene, and propylene oxide (PO), all of which find diverse applications across industries, spanning from insulation materials to automotive and consumer goods.
This momentous announcement closely follows the commencement of LyondellBasell's propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol (PO/TBA) plant in Texas. This milestone solidifies the company's standing as a global leader in the I&D sector, boasting substantial annual production capabilities. The PO/TBA unit in Texas boasts an impressive annual capacity of 470 thousand metric tonnes of PO, along with a staggering one million metric tonnes of TBA and its derivatives.
Each product within the +LC range is accompanied by an ISCC+ mass balance certificate, ensuring transparency throughout the entire value chain.
This mass balance methodology facilitates the allocation of renewable and recycled feedstock to the final product when blended with conventional raw materials during production.
Additionally, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data is readily accessible for these products, permitting businesses to make direct comparisons between the carbon footprints of +LC solutions and traditional fossil-based alternatives. By opting for +LC products, businesses can seamlessly integrate sustainability into their operations, all while upholding performance standards, thus epitomising a balanced approach that caters to both functional needs and sustainability objectives.
Currently available in Europe and the Americas, the +LC solutions are set to expand into Asia in early 2024. This strategic move underscores LyondellBasell's commitment to preserving fossil resources and reducing GHG emissions stemming from feedstock production by offering products based on renewable and recycled feedstocks as alternatives to fossil feedstocks.
