CO2-Based Refrigeration Systems in Cold Chain Industry

CO2-based refrigeration systems provide precise temperature control and help firms reduce their energy bills and environmental impact.
The system is apt for the storage of perishable items like fruits and vegetables.
Cold Chain Refrigeration Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based company that designs and builds cold storage for industrial and commercial refrigeration systems, is expanding into carbon dioxide (CO2)-based refrigeration systems.
The company aims to provide more energy-efficient and sustainable cold room solutions. To this end, it is adopting CO2 (R-744) as a refrigerant, which is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than other older options like HFCs and HCFCs.
The CO2-based refrigeration systems are more sustainable because they function at high pressures and very good at transferring heat. They help recover waste heat, which in turn is used to heat water or spaces, reducing energy consumption. So this way, businesses can save a lot on heating costs.
Unlike traditional refrigerants, CO2 refrigeration systems are safe, non-toxic, and do not pose health risks. They are non-flammable under normal conditions, preventing the chances of fire breakouts, which are rife with other refrigerants. This makes them competent for the storage of perishable items like fruits and vegetables and also a reliable option for food storage, supermarkets, and food processing sectors.
CO2 systems can also be customised to meet the specific needs of various industries. For instance, they are used in ice skating rinks to produce ice, where they use cold and heat to improve energy efficiency. The residue of heat or waste heat from it can be used for other purposes, such as heating water, warming spaces, or dehumidifying air.
The company is also working with several businesses to install large cold rooms, setting an example for the cold storage industry to operate more sustainably. This is a typical case study of how companies can adopt advanced CO2 technology to reduce their environmental impact, energy consumption, and energy bills.
