Open-Access CO₂ Infrastructure Being Readied at Port of Södertälje

- The infrastructure provides a practical solution for local businesses working on carbon capture.
- The facility will be up and running by 2030.
- The project will help Sweden achieve its clean energy goals.
Logistics service provider Inter Terminals Sweden (ITS) has partnered with the Port of Södertälje to develop carbon dioxide (CO₂) infrastructure in the Mälardalen region of Sweden for all regional companies.
The project's objective is to allow any company in the region to capture and store CO₂, as well as reuse it, with the help of infrastructure. The CO₂ would come from factories or facilities aiming to cut their emissions.
The project's first leg includes a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study and obtaining the permits needed to start construction. First, a facility will be built to temporarily store CO₂ collected from regional companies. Second, the stored CO₂ will be loaded onto vessels heading to sites for permanent underground storage or reuse.

Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of ITS, said: "This initiative marks an important milestone for Inter Terminals, positioning us as a key enabler in the emerging CO₂-logistics market in Mälardalen."
Måns Frostell, CEO of Södertälje Port, said: “This joint initiative further strengthens Södertälje Port’s position as a hub for sustainable freight logistics and the future infrastructure for energy management in the Stockholm region.”
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technologies help countries meet global climate targets. They capture CO₂ before it is released into the atmosphere so it can be safely stored underground or reused in industrial processes.
