Birla Carbon, a prominent manufacturer and supplier of top-tier carbon solutions, has successfully concluded the acquisition of Nanocyl SA, a globally recognised leader in multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) located in Sambreville, Belgium.

This strategic acquisition significantly broadens Birla Carbon's footprint in the Energy Systems market, positioning the company as a front-runner in materials crucial for the performance of Lithium-Ion batteries and various other conductive applications.

Dr. Santrupt Misra, Group Director of Birla Carbon, as well as the Director of Chemicals and Group H.R. at Aditya Birla Group, expressed his thoughts on this acquisition, stating, "Birla Carbon has been actively exploring various avenues for innovation in its ongoing pursuit of a comprehensive sustainability agenda. The acquisition of Nanocyl represents a clear step forward in realising this strategy.

"We anticipate that this partnership will empower Birla Carbon to play a substantial role in the burgeoning energy systems sector. Moreover, Aditya Birla Group has consistently prioritised investments in sustainability and circularity-driven initiatives, guided by innovative approaches to ensure future readiness, in alignment with our overarching Purpose: to enrich lives by establishing dynamic and responsible businesses that inspire trust."

John Loudermilk, President and Chief Executive Officer of Birla Carbon, shared his excitement about this acquisition, stating, "We are delighted to welcome Nanocyl into the Birla Carbon family. Laurent and his experienced team have been pioneers in the field of carbon nanotubes, which offer distinctive performance characteristics suitable for a wide array of applications, most notably in energy systems like lithium-ion batteries."

He went on to emphasise, "Birla Carbon's unwavering commitment to driving growth through sustainable innovation perfectly aligns with the potential of MWCNTs to facilitate the electrification of the transportation industry, delivering substantial environmental benefits and contributing to climate change mitigation. We are dedicated to collaborating with our expanding customer base to create unprecedented value through an extended portfolio of carbon products and technologies."

Laurent Kosbach, Chief Executive Officer of Nanocyl, also shared his perspective, stating, "We take great pride in our journey over the past two decades, successfully developing and commercialising MWCNTs as a pioneering start-up, with the invaluable support of our current partners and investors. However, given the increasing demand for our products, the time has come to join forces with a global industry leader to maximise the synergies and potential of these materials across various end uses."

Mr. Kosbach further remarked, "Birla Carbon's robust R&D expertise, diverse product portfolio, and extensive market experience are poised to unleash the full growth potential of Nanocyl and our innovative products."

In addition to the Conductex™ family of conductive carbon black additives and active anode materials, the incorporation of Nanocyl's advanced MWCNTs significantly enhances Birla Carbon's range of solutions for conductive applications. This development underscores the company's commitment to driving innovation, sustainability, and value creation for its customers and the environment.
