  • Businesses in the tourism sector get a new ESG framework.

  • Tourism activities are picking up at a faster pace, approaching pre-pandemic levels.

UN Tourism, a United Nations agency that promotes responsible tourism, has partnered with easyJet holidays, a leisure network offering holiday packages across Europe and North Africa.

The partnership aims to create a new Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework for tourism businesses.

As tourism and other allied activities are bouncing back after the pandemic, with tourist arrivals returning to 96 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, the current frameworks are insufficient to measure ESG metrics like environmental impact, community involvement, and employee well-being.

Since an efficient ESG framework or standard has not been in place for tourism companies, it becomes extremely difficult to compare their performance on sustainability and social responsibility.

To solve this problem, Un Tourism, along with Oxford's SDG Impact Lab, is working on a unified ESG framework to address the specific needs of tourism businesses. easyJet holidays will step up its efforts to support the development of the standard.

The goal of this framework is to help them understand and manage their environmental and social impacts. The tie-up between public organisations like the UN and private companies like easyJet holidays will help the industry achieve this aim.

The new framework provides a platform for governments and businesses to work from the same data and principles, supports the existing tourism measures endorsed by all UN member states, and provides tourism businesses with a standardised way to report on ESG.
